Crown Molding & Decorative Column Infomation

F.A.Q.s

Pro-Flex Flexible Crown Mouldings and Polyurethane Millwork:

Q: How do I install flexible crown mouldings and trim?

A: Complete instructions for installing flexible crown mouldings, window casings, door casings or baseboards can be found under “MOULDING INSTALLATION” on the home page.

Q: How flexible are your flexible crown mouldings and decorative chair rail casings?

A: these crown Mouldings and chair rail casings are as flexible as a standard garden hose depending on which way you are trying to bend your moulding. You can bend trim mouldings yourself when you are applying a base board or chair rail; however, if your application is for a rounded top window casing, a crown moulding or an arched moulding, we would need to know some moulding measurements before production, as it is difficult to bend the moulding profile this way without some advance custom casting. Having said this, it is typical with an arch profile moulding or rounded window casing to have a degree of play available in case your measurements vary marginally.

Q: What are your flexible crown mouldings made of?

A: Our crown mouldings, window casings and baseboard are manufactured from an advanced polymer product that has the appearance of hardened rubber.

Q: How closely will the flexible crown mouldings or decorative trim match my profile.

A: For any in stock or custom mouldings you should achieve a perfect match, connecting your profile to it’s likeness in wood, MDF, ultralite or finger joint pine. If there is ever a question as to whether or not we have a matching moulding profile you can always fax us a tracing of your crown molding or trim profile with measurements to be compared in our shop before ordering.

Q: Flexible crown mouldings seem more expensive than wood moulding; Why is this?

A: Flexible crown mouldings are more expensive than wood crown moldings, but a greater savings over other techniques of matching wood or MDF profiles to a curved wall or radius; these often include steaming, slotting or cost prohibitive custom wood work. Because matches so well to the ordered profile, you only need to use for the bent or radial portion of the application.

Q: What measurements does Profile Mouldings require to determine the length of flexible mouldings needed for my application?

A: You can view and print out the order form to acquire the measurements necessary in order to determine the length and radius of your mouldings if applicable.

Q: If this stuff is so flexible, Why do you need to know the radius of my window or wall, Why can’t I just bend it on site.

A: You can bend mouldings yourself when you are applying a base board or chair rail; however your application is for a rounded window casing, a crown or an arch, we do need to know some measurements before production, as it is difficult to bend the profile this way without some advance custom casting. Having said this, it is typical with an arch or rounded casing to have a degree of play available in case your measurements vary marginally.

Q: How do I figure out the measurements of my radius when I am dealing with a finished wall and are unable to measure through the wall to measure the diameter?

A: Go to the TIPS IN MEASURING RADIUSES page. This should help when measuring difficult or multiple angles.

Q: Are these products for indoor or outdoor use.

A: Flexible mouldings are perfect for indoor and outdoor use.

Q: How do I stain mouldings?

A: With any gel or solid stain. Standard stains will not work as they need a porous surface to soak into.

Q: What types of paint will adhere to mouldings?

A: Any latex or oil based paint will adhere nicely to mouldings. Additionally, many typical craft store coatings may also work. If there is any question, apply some of the intended coating to a small piece of the mouldings an let dry to test for adherence.

Q: Do I need to prime my mouldings.

A: This is up to the individual. Some people prefer to prime any surface before painting. Mouldings come with a clear primer already applied.

Polyurethane:

Q: How do I install Polyurethane mouldings?

A: Complete instructions for installing polyurethane mouldings and millwork can be found under “INSTALLATION” on the home page.

Q: How does the density of polyurethane compare to wood?

A: We manufacture the majority of our products with 6 Lb polyurethane foam typical to that which is used by other major polyurethane suppliers of architectural mouldings. If you were to hammer a nail through one of our mouldings, it would be similar to hammering through a piece of soft pine.

Q: How will direct sunlight effect my mouldings.

A: The mouldings do come with a white primer coating on them that will provide ultraviolet light protection during installation. Many exterior paints now contain some level of protection from the sun’s rays. As with wood, the protection is only as good as the finish that is applied.
